There’s that brick wall again

Of course, of course, just two weeks after psyching myself up to take on more projects and radically boost productivity, I found that brick wall I know all too well.

This time around its called the flu, but it seems like I fell flat on my back after running full speed into a solid barrier.  That barrier of course, if the physical limitations that get in the way of psychological ambition.

It didn’t take too long this time, I hardly got two pay periods in with my new contract before I found myself unable to get out of bed, even if it was to stumble ten feet down the hallway to my computer.  I’m not even sure if it was the H1N1, but it sure was a hell of a nasty bug.  For at least two days there was significant muscle pain, sweating, and sinus pressure – some of the worst feelings I can remember going at least a few years back.

OK, so what am I doing now?  Complaining about the illness?

Yeah, but I’m also trying to break the non-posting habit.  Sometimes I’d rather limit my posts to ones I know are going to be really good, but that doesn’t seem to help as much in the search rankings as getting something new out on a constant and consistent basis. The incentives created by SEO might be all screwed up, but we gotta keep chasing those dollars.

Anyway, here’s a few things I learned this week:

  • When I work too much, I get sick.  I should have learned this one when I was aiming for a top 10 GPA in high school, but I still act surprised when it happens.
  • There’s nothing like the love of a good woman to help get ya through the terrible feelings of exhaustion and pain.  Having a few loyal and sympathetic looking dogs doesn’t hurt either.
  • Green tea is awesome when you’re ill.  Not only does it clear out the head and sinuses, it also makes you really really hungry despite any kind of nausea.
  • There’s no such thing as too much sleep for a sick person.
  • Its nice to have income coming in from websites that don’t require constant effort, but any time a site stagnates for too long, it cuts in to that long term revenue potential.
  • Adding links to my favorite URLs seems to make their search position fall.

Oh snap, the last few were actually on topic for this blog.  I’ll be writing more on that one here shortly, I’ve got an idea about chaos and link building.

I’m a big fan of hot food, hot tea, hot showers, and oversleeping to deal with the winter bugs, but what’s your favorite anti-illness trick?

  1. I’d say a good shot or two of tequila will clear the sinuses, but I think your approach might be a bit better. 😉

I’ve so far (knock on wood/head) been able to avoid any downtime from a bug. I’m completely worthless and whiny whenever I get sick, so I’m glad I have yet to get sick.

Hope you are feeling better soon! Thanks for swinging by my blog and commenting on my DreamHost post. It’s nice to hear of others experiences, especially from someone well versed on reviewing hosts!

  2. hey John,
I fully agree with the things you “learned”.
Love, tea, and sleep are awesome, and being sick sucks!
But your last point bears repeating and I’d love to read more about it, for I think I’ve also noticed that building links for a specific phrase can actually hurt your ranks for the phrase, though I’ve got to believe it is temporary… or at least hope. 🙂
Anyway, feel free to write a full post about that last point.
