hi John,
Cool trick. I just tried the right-click-properties thing. I had no idea what I was missing all this time. And yet another reason to put off upgrading my FireFox browser. :) I wonder why they deleted this feature. I like it! One learns something new every day. Thanks! And when I do upgrade, I know where to get the addon. :) Steve

Seeing I'm also the owner of a large social community of bloggers I take this very seriously. Currently I'm the only moderator on our social website blog engage and for sometime I don't see that changing. When and if I do pick moderators it will be selected from external sources and not current members.

However I do have a few moderators in our blog forum that are member of the main social site. I do not see any moral or ethical issues with this.

Taking advantage of a voting system and banning members that submit content that would be competitive to yours is very disturbing. I think all people bloggers writers or members have the right to equal opportunity. I'm sure reddit does too and for this reason we can only blame her and not the website.

I'm a member and a fan of reddit but I've never actually used the service much. I submit some of my blog engage members content but that's about it

hi John,
I had to laugh when you wrote, "one of my top unproductive online hobbies"... I've got several of those too. :) I haven't checked out Reddit yet (yes, I am living under a rock) but I understand what you mean about the power of moderators and how power can be abused... and often is.
BTW, I like the picture you selected. I'm guessing the bottle is Scotch or whiskey, but I'm wondering what brand starts with Y. Any guesses? I'm a single malt man myself, when I can afford it. ~ Steve

Man I feel incredibly late to the ballgame. I've used Reddit but haven't really dug into it and used it for it's full potential. The fact that someone was able to gain positioning within an existing social site like that and then abuse the power that comes with it is quite alarming. Whoda thunk? I sure didn't realize that it was possible!

Hell, I have a problem getting that marketing mindset in my own head, and even if I could, I think I'd be on the high road anyway...it's just how I am. I'm sure the lure was great on this guy, but he should still "feel" the issue and know which way is right. So he probably deserves everything coming at him.

People aren't very forgiving when it comes to stuff like this, but given enough time he could outlive the fiasco and continue on just fine. Wonder if he'd do this again though.

Chronic marketer? lol

Sunday just sucked for my favorite sites to browse idly: DigitalPoint, Reddit, and the FourthTurning forums (some obscure socio-political theory certain to stay obscure because the webmaster actually wants to keep the spiders & traffic away).

Eh. It actually seems to be that the problem is related to old versions of vBulletin (plus Reddit's code not scaling well with its huge traffic growth).

I see it all the time on Pligg sites too - and mostly people need to clean up deleted entries from the database, or at least delete the spam that typically clogs up said platform.

hi John,
What websites were you trying to reach? I haven't seen a "server too busy" message in a long time... Can you give an example?
That said, I think it is still important to design sites as if someone might have to access them via dial-up... That is, make sure there is some text to read while the images load... at least something so I don't do as you say and click away after 5 seconds...
Very good point. Steve
PS. Come to think of it, I was at a forum the other day that took FOREVER each time I tried to go to a new page... can't remember what it was though.
Yeh, good post. :D

The weird part is, it almost sounds like they were charged and convicted of violating the privacy of the guys who beat up the slow kid and uploaded the video! Damned if you do, damned if you don't?

Google's write-up didn't have too many details - I think they want to keep appealing the ruling and maximize outrage in the meantime. The harsher crime was dropped at least, but its hard to understand exactly what happened when legal-talk already sounds like Latin and this case was actually tried in Italian.

hey John,
The Italian ruling on Google blows me away. Some jerk uploaded a bad video, and when google was informed of it, they took it down. If google has to screen all content (and pass judgement on it as well), I don't see how youtube can work. Crazy ruling. Steve

Give it time. It's still rolling out. Do a multi datacenter pagerank check to see if all DC's have your site or other people you know updated at all centers. I'm thinking end of the month, full speed ahead.

Specifically, Reddit brought it my attention that searching for __Epic beard guy dramatica__ doesn't actually show the Epic Beard Guy article on Encyclopedia Dramatica. It will take you to hundreds of websites linking to the article in question, but it won't show the specific page we're obviously searching for.

So I would say this tweak has gone way too far already and is interfering with the quality of searches. Somehow, I escaped the hit, so I'm not sure exactly what is getting slapped.

Maybe since they're so focused on their new social searches, that they've tried to separate the net into multiple indexes?

hi John,
I just checked your search "Mike site:www.facebook.com" here in California, and got 7,920,000. So if it used to yield 248 million results, it is definately a lot smaller now. The question would be if it is temporary or permanent, and whether they've just gotten rid of excess bathwater, or if they've tossed a few babies as well?
I have seen some "weird" results lately. Maybe a storm is a brewin'.
